A proud Mexican-American from San Antonio, Texas, Joe now lives with his wife Cat, their three sons Cruz, Esai, and Diego in Skokie, Illinois. He has more than a decade of experience engaged in college access, diversity education, and student retention programming. In 2019, Joe joined the Chicago-based nonprofit, Partnership for College Completion. In his role as Equity Program Manager, he advises and consults with community colleges and four-year universities across northern Illinois to assist them with closing graduation gaps that persist among Black, Latinx, and low-income students.
